Many experts think it's important for parents to have their children walk barefoot as often as possible. This is beneficial in strengthening the entire foot. Additionally, the toes can become stronger and more flexible by grasping the floor, and circulation and muscle tone may improve. Children’s feet will feel good when they are washed and dried thoroughly, especially between the toes. There are common foot conditions in children that can easily be prevented.  Ingrown toenails may be avoided when the toenails are trimmed properly.  These can include corns and bunions which generally develop as a result of wearing shoes that do not fit correctly. Athlete’s foot is a contagious fungal infection and may be avoided when appropriate shoes are worn in public areas. When you see your child’s shoes are too small, it is strongly suggested that new shoes are purchased promptly that are comfortable and fit correctly. If you would like additional information about tips on how to care for children’s feet, please speak with a podiatrist.

Making sure that your children maintain good foot health is very important as they grow. If you have any questions, contact one of our podiatrists of Cascade Foot & Ankle. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

Having healthy feet during childhood can help prevent medical problems later in life, namely in the back and legs. As children grow, their feet require different types of care. Here are some things to consider...

Although babies do not walk yet, it is still very important to take care of their feet.

Avoid putting tight shoes or socks on his or her feet.

Allow the baby to stretch and kick his or her feet to feel comfortable.

As a toddler, kids are now on the move and begin to develop differently. At this age, toddlers are getting a feel for walking, so don’t be alarmed if your toddler is unsteady or ‘walks funny’.

As your child gets older, it is important to teach them how to take care of their feet.

Show them proper hygiene to prevent infections such as fungus.

Be watchful for any pain or injury.

Have all injuries checked by a doctor as soon as possible.

Comfortable, protective shoes should always be worn, especially at play.

The tibial nerve is located in the ankle and runs through the tarsal tunnel. This is a passageway in the ankle that is made of bones and ligaments. Tarsal tunnel syndrome occurs when the tibial nerve becomes compressed and may happen from overusing the foot and ankle. Common symptoms include a tingling or numbing feeling on the bottom of the foot, and there may be a burning sensation. It may worsen with prolonged standing or walking and may lessen when the affected foot is elevated. Tarsal tunnel syndrome may occur from having a cyst in the foot, severe flat feet, or possibly from an ankle deformity following an injury. Non-surgical treatment includes wearing orthotics and stopping the activity that caused the syndrome. If surgery is an option, healing time takes approximately two weeks. If you have chronic pain in the sole of your foot, please consider seeing a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis and treatment options.

Tarsal tunnel syndrome can be very uncomfortable to live with. If you are experiencing tarsal tunnel syndrome, contact one of our podiatrists of Cascade Foot & Ankle. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

Tarsal tunnel syndrome, which can also be called tibial nerve dysfunction, is an uncommon condition of misfiring peripheral nerves in the foot. The tibial nerve is the peripheral nerve in the leg responsible for sensation and movement of the foot and calf muscles. In tarsal tunnel syndrome, the tibial nerve is damaged, causing problems with movement and feeling in the foot of the affected leg.

Common Cause of Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

  • Involves pressure or an injury, direct pressure on the tibial nerve for an extended period of time, sometimes caused by other body structures close by or near the knee.
  • Diseases that damage nerves, including diabetes, may cause tarsal tunnel syndrome.
  • At times, tarsal tunnel syndrome can appear without an obvious cause in some cases.

The Effects of Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

  • Different sensations, an afflicted person may experience pain, tingling, burning or other unusual sensations in the foot of the affected leg.
  • The foot muscles, toes and ankle become weaker, and curling your toes or flexing your foot can become difficult.
  • If condition worsens, infections and ulcers may develop on the foot that is experiencing the syndrome.

A physical exam of the leg can help identify the presence of tarsal tunnel syndrome. Medical tests, such as a nerve biopsy, are also used to diagnose the condition. Patients may receive physical therapy and prescriptive medication. In extreme cases, some may require surgery.

Can Relief Be Found From Heel Spurs?

A calcium deposit which may result in a heel spur can occur from inflammation and tiny tears in the plantar fascia. This is the band of tissue that runs along the sole of the foot, and connects the heel to the toes.  A heel spur can cause severe pain and discomfort, despite its small size. It can develop from participating in running and jumping activities, and people who are overweight are at an increased risk to get heel spurs. A common symptom many patients have can include stabbing heel pain, which may be worse upon arising in the morning. Mild relief may be found when custom made orthotics are worn, and this may help to alleviate some of the pressure and pain that often accompanies Sever's disease. In severe cases, surgery may be an option to consider that can permanently remove the heel spur. If you have developed this ailment, it is strongly advised that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can determine what the best course of treatment is for you.

Heel spurs can be incredibly painful and sometimes may make you unable to participate in physical activities. To get medical care for your heel spurs, contact one of our podiatrists from Cascade Foot & Ankle. Our doctors will do everything possible to treat your condition.

Heels Spurs

Heel spurs are formed by calcium deposits on the back of the foot where the heel is. This can also be caused by small fragments of bone breaking off one section of the foot, attaching onto the back of the foot. Heel spurs can also be bone growth on the back of the foot and may grow in the direction of the arch of the foot.

Older individuals usually suffer from heel spurs and pain sometimes intensifies with age. One of the main condition's spurs are related to is plantar fasciitis.

Pain

The pain associated with spurs is often because of weight placed on the feet. When someone is walking, their entire weight is concentrated on the feet. Bone spurs then have the tendency to affect other bones and tissues around the foot. As the pain continues, the feet will become tender and sensitive over time.

Treatments

There are many ways to treat heel spurs. If one is suffering from heel spurs in conjunction with pain, there are several methods for healing. Medication, surgery, and herbal care are some options.

What Causes Foot Cramps?

Foot cramps are a common and painful complaint that often interrupts an otherwise peaceful night’s sleep. In and of themselves, cramps are simply the result of a muscle flexing and staying flexed for a period of time. This is very common when sleeping, because the feet are usually pointing downward and the leg muscles contract, causing a spasm. The easiest cure is to stretch or massage the tightened muscle. Other symptoms that may appear with cramps are muscle weakness, redness or changes in color to the skin, extremely severe pain, and swelling. These may indicate a need for medical attention. Cramping can also be the result of several underlying conditions, including magnesium or potassium deficiency, dehydration, dialysis, muscle overuse, pregnancy, improper footwear, and side effects from medications. If you experience extreme or frequent foot cramps, it may be a good idea to discuss the condition with a podiatrist who can give you guidance and treatment options.

Everyday foot care is very important to prevent infection and other foot ailments. If you need your feet checked, contact one of our podiatrists from Cascade Foot & Ankle. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Everyday Foot Care

Often, people take care of their bodies, face and hair more so than they do for their feet. But the feet are a very important aspect of our bodies, and one that we should pay more attention to. Without our feet, we would not be able to perform most daily tasks.

It is best to check your feet regularly to make sure there are no new bruises or cuts that you may not have noticed before. For dry feet, moisturizer can easily be a remedy and can be applied as often as necessary to the affected areas. Wearing shoes that fit well can also help you maintain good foot health, as well as making it easier to walk and do daily activities without the stress or pain of ill-fitting shoes, high heels, or even flip flops. Wearing clean socks with closed shoes is important to ensure that sweat and bacteria do not accumulate within the shoe. Clean socks help to prevent Athlete’s foot, fungi problems, bad odors, and can absorb sweat.

A large band of tissue that lies on the bottom of the foot connects the toes to the heels. This is known as the plantar fascia, and plantar fasciitis is the term used if it becomes inflamed. Many runners experience this condition, which often causes severe pain and discomfort. Additionally, people who stand on hard surfaces for most of the day may develop plantar fasciitis. Patients who are obese may develop this ailment as a result of the added weight the feet endure. There are a number of strengthening exercises that may bring mild relief. These include standing on a step and lowering the heels one at a time until a gentle stretch is felt. Some patients find it helps when they roll their foot over a tennis ball. If you have plantar fasciitis, it is strongly suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can guide you toward the correct treatment techniques.

Plantar fasciitis can be very painful and inconvenient. If you are experiencing heel pain or symptoms of plantar fasciitis, contact one of our podiatrists  from Cascade Foot & Ankle. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is the inflammation of the thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot, known as the plantar fascia, and causes mild to severe heel pain.

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?

  • Excessive running
  • Non-supportive shoes
  • Overpronation
  • Repeated stretching and tearing of the plantar fascia

How Can It Be Treated?

  • Conservative measures – anti-inflammatories, ice packs, stretching exercises, physical therapy, orthotic devices
  • Shockwave therapy – sound waves are sent to the affected area to facilitate healing and are usually used for chronic cases of plantar fasciitis
  • Surgery – usually only used as a last resort when all else fails. The plantar fascia can be surgically detached from the heel

While very treatable, plantar fasciitis is definitely not something that should be ignored. Especially in severe cases, speaking to your doctor right away is highly recommended to avoid complications and severe heel pain. Your podiatrist can work with you to provide the appropriate treatment options tailored to your condition.
