Everything swells when you are pregnant, and your feet and ankles are no exception. This swelling (edema) during pregnancy is caused when your body produces and retains more blood and fluids to feed the growing baby in your uterus. The inordinate amount of pressure that the uterus places on blood vessels causes them to struggle with pumping blood back out of your feet and legs. Also, the extra fluids your body creates during pregnancy tend to gather in the lower extremities during the day when you are standing and sitting. You can help ease the symptoms of edema by wearing comfortable shoes, drinking plenty of water, and taking breaks to elevate and stretch your feet throughout the day. The stress and strain of extra weight and swelling can lead to other conditions in your feet such as corns, calluses, pain, and overpronation—where the foot flattens and rolls inwardly while walking. What Foot Problems Can Arise During Pregnancy?

Understanding Overpronation

If the arch of the foot collapses while bearing weight, it is known as overpronation.  When the frame of the foot collapses overpronation causes stress and inflammation to the feet leading to a variety of conditions such as plantar fasciitis, heel spurs, metatarsalgia, tendonitis, or bunions. Overpronation is common among those who have flexible flat feet, but other factors like obesity and pregnancy can also cause flat feet. Some patients with overpronation never develop symptoms or feel pain, but if symptoms are present the pain is extreme and walking becomes difficult. This causes intense strain on the feet and calves. Patients who experience overpronation should wear footwear that fits properly and also has a firm and supportive heel. These patients may even be prescribed orthotics to support the arch of the foot. Anyone who is afflicted with overpronation should consult with a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis and treatment recommendation.

What Is Cold Treatment?

Cold treatment is a simple and useful way to treat foot and ankle injuries by applying ice to the affected area. Ice helps with injuries by cooling down the affected soft tissues, making blood vessels constrict and reducing blood flow and bleeding in the area. Reducing blood flow to the injured area also reduces swelling, and therefore pain and inflammation. The ice that you use should never be placed directly on your skin, as this could cause an ice burn. Instead, wrap the ice in a towel before putting it on the injury. You should ice an injury for approximately 10-15 minutes, then wait at least two hours before applying ice again. If you have certain medical conditions, such as a loss of sensation in your feet, high blood pressure, heart problems, open wounds, or Raynaud’s disease, you should not use cold treatment without a doctor’s approval. Lastly, rehabilitation or therapy might be needed to gain full functionality in the afflicted area.
